Well, of course, I personally have no interest in being the one who brings my friend’s book to the table. That’s not my role. I was just trying to point out that most of us don’t get to choose whether or not our friendship can be a mental health crisis and how it can be. For me, it was pretty clear that there was something wrong with that friendship, so I had to make a choice.
A mental health crisis is a problem that is so severe that it causes the person to avoid their friends and to withdraw from their society. A person who has a mental health crisis tends to exhibit one of four common symptoms: A. a person who is extremely depressed. B. a person who is extremely anxious. C. a person who is extremely disorganized and incoherent. D. A person who is extremely paranoid. In other words, someone who is in a state of extreme distress.
As many of you will know, mental health is a very difficult problem to resolve. It’s not simply a matter of putting on a hat, getting in a car, and driving around the country. A person who is in a state of extreme distress has a tendency to isolate themselves from friends and loved ones, to isolate oneself from society. Like anyone who has ever broken up a relationship, a person in a state of extreme distress is likely to be somewhat paranoid and self-obsessed.
The good news is that people with mental health issues are also (relatively) less likely to be violent. In a small community where mental health services are available, a person with extreme distress will likely be seen and treated by a professional who will have the skills and knowledge to help them. Those with mental health issues often have a tendency to isolate themselves from their family, friends, and community.
