I’ve been reading The Ram Dass Book about the founder of Buddhism, The Dalai Lama, and his thoughts on all things spirituality and self-knowledge. I think this book is absolutely essential reading for any modern-day Buddhist, and especially for anyone who is interested in the self.
What I like about the Ram Dass book is the depth of its philosophy. The Dalai Lama has no tolerance for people who claim to know more about Buddhism than he does. Instead, he demands that all those who have claims to be “Buddhist” must first prove that they are actually practicing Buddhism. Otherwise, they will never get to experience the full benefits of Buddhism.
Although the book is about Buddhism, it is not a complete story of Buddhism. It is largely a guide to self-awareness. Instead of the usual “knowledge is the birthright” kind of thing, Ram Dass talks about the self, and how it is the sum of our individual actions and experiences. The book is intended to be a tool for self-awareness, and we can all learn a lot about the self from it.
Ram Dass writes the introduction, and he has written many books for us to read, so we’re going to include some of the highlights. He mentions how we were always taught to “think in terms of the self, not the ego”. He also talks about how we were taught to “let go of the past and focus on the present and the future”.
This is important because it also helps to remind us how many of our actions are actually controlled by our own thoughts. For instance, “I’m going to do this” and “I think you’re doing that,” are almost indistinguishable until you hear the words. Our thoughts control our actions, so understanding how our thoughts lead us to do what we do is a great place to start when learning self-awareness.
But the problem is that when we let go of the past, we also let go of our ego. The ego is a part of our identity, and it can be hard to let go of it for long periods. This is especially true of those who are introverts or are shy. It is easy to forget that when we let go of the past, we also let go of our ego. We don’t know how we feel and why we feel that way. We don’t know what we want, and we can’t choose a path that leads to our goal.
Thats why the game is called “ram dass book”. It is about that time in our life when we arent even on autopilot. It is the time when we are in our heads. We are not even aware of many of our emotions and actions. We are in a state of being in our heads where we are not really aware of what’s happening.
The only real way to be fully aware is to step outside of our mind and into the world of another person, to speak to them or to write to them. Writing a story is one of the ways. Writing something that has a happy ending is another. So ram dass book will be about the time that we are not on autopilot. A story about death and what has gone before.
